Lately, there’s been a lot of coverage of Barack and Michelle Obama on the Sydney news. Some of it has to do with Australia’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, visiting the US on his world tour and meeting the Obama’s for the first time. Some it has to do with little news stories like Michelle Obama’s fantastic wardrobe choices or the story of her starting the White House’s organic garden. They even covered Barack’s slip up on the Tonight Show but even that story just made the Aussies love him more for his human error. Whatever the reason for the Australian news reporting on the Obamas, it seems like the stories are daily and always positive… and, I kind of like it.
It’s refreshing to hear a news story speaking well of our President and our country. Since I have been here, there have been many occasions in which Aussie news reporters make a comment after an Obama story that goes along the lines of, “Awe, how much do we love the First Lady” or “How good is it that the US has someone intelligent back in power.” Either way, they’re positive comments and it’s nice to hear that maybe the US and its presidency might be getting some respect back. Just maybe, the U.S. might be getting back in to the world’s good graces, again.
